Fierce attachments review6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() The specific data of her personal history notwithstanding, Gornick’s story is a generic, timeless one: the Search for a Self, for a bounded identity. ![]() Gornick has written a private reminiscence, with the thinnest patina of structure, yet the vividness of her style and the honesty of her perception are such that they infuse her account with the force of parable. ![]() Brimming with life, with what the author describes as “a kind of idiot attention to the look and feel of things,” it is a sustained close-up of a mother-daughter relationship-that much examined, deified, and excoriated arrangement of birth in which all women find themselves. Fierce Attachments,” the somewhat literal, even clinical-sounding title of Vivian Gornick’s memoir, is a book that will leave its readers anything but dispassionate. ![]()

Sky Trackers by Amanda Midlam6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The resultant series aimed to popularise science for children through drama, and to excite them about its opportunities and its potential for future career choices, and at the same time demystify the work and working conditions of scientists. Sky Trackers the series grew from a request by Australia's federal science agency (the CSIRO) to Patricia Edgar, the then director of the ACTF, to create a program that would help attract girls towards careers in science. Although the series and movie have characters in common, they do not share continuity. The series aired in Australia in 1995, on the Seven Network. The subsequent TV series, which had an entirely new cast fronted by Petra Yared and Zbych Trofimiuk, was shot at the Australia Telescope Compact Array in the New South Wales outback near Narrabri. The 1990 telemovie was shot at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, at Tidbinbilla in the Australian Capital Territory. ![]()

Casey plett dream of a woman6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() The reader immediately senses, for instance, Iris’s cheerful gregariousness, David’s go-with-it-ness, and when David transitions, becoming Vera, the reader also quickly notices her new maturity and quiet assertiveness then there’s Nicole’s loneliness, her self-assuredness and dark humor, Gemma’s desperation, and so on. Plett is able to flesh out each character’s individuality, stressing more on their psychological temperament than their physical characteristics. The stories are not all written in first person, but there is a first person flavor to each of them in the sense that the reader views the landscape of the story through one particular character. In A Dream, Plett lets the characters take over, the language she uses is dictated by their personality, each well-rounded and recognizable. The stories are character driven, and center the transition of its characters against a backdrop of a country and society that is, likewise, in transition. ![]() Casey Plett’s A Dream of a Woman is a collection of short stories about transwomen transitioning into early adulthood and seeking relationships, sex, and bodies that align with their sense of self. ![]()

Sir isaac newton opticks6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Refrangibility of the Rays of Light, is their Disposition to be refracted or turned out of their Way in passing out of one transparent Body or Medium into another. ![]() The least Light or part of Light, which may be stopp'd alone without the rest of the Light, or propagated alone, or do or suffer any thing alone, which the rest of the Light doth not or suffers not, I call a Ray of Light. ![]() For that part of Light which is stopp'd cannot be the same with that which is let pass. For it is manifest that Light consists of Parts, both Successive and Contemporary because in the same place you may stop that which comes one moment, and let pass that which comes presently after and in the same time you may stop it in any one place, and let it pass in any other. My Design in this Book is not to explain the Properties of Light by Hypotheses, but to propose and prove them by Reason and Experiments: In order to which I shall premise the following Definitions and Axioms.īy the Rays of Light I understand its least Parts, and those as well Successive in the same Lines, as Contemporary in several Lines. ![]()

Flight of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Additionally, her exceptional portrayal of the spiritual world adds much to the novel. Furthermore, her world-building skills are above average and her characters drive the plot. ![]() The storyline is well-crafted and contains only a few minor errors. ![]() Will she discover what it is to be a part of a real family? To answer this, read the book!:) Busse’s latest novel holds the attention from cover to cover because of the careful attention given to continuity and plot details. However, she is touched by Damien’s memories of his family, and intrigued by his relationship with the Light. After arriving at her new home with Damien, Selene feels more out of place than ever. Damien believes that marrying Selene was a good decision, but struggles to reach her emotionally because of the many walls she has put up over the years. Her hasty marriage to Damien is very discomforting in many ways, and recurring nightmares of past dreamscapes make sleep nearly impossible. Selene, whom we last saw on the run with Lord Damien, is still trying to escape the darkness of her family’s past. This second installment in Busse’s The Ravenwood Saga is better than the first because Busse takes the time to develop her characters further without sacrificing the strength of her storyline. Busse is back with the much awaited sequel to Mark of the Raven, and we are happy to say that this novel is even better. Author’s Note: We were provided with an ARC of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review. ![]()

Books like blake crouch6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ★ Beneath the Sugar Sky. by Seanan McGuire. Three distinct time periods exist simultaneously-the linear notion of time having been replaced by an Einsteinian continuum-suggesting that humans will always seek connections with each other, even across time and often through stories. This intimate, epic, and now-classic novel follows a young woman named Aomame as she enters a parallel version of 1984 Tokyo. ![]() ★ 1Q84. By Haruki Murakami and translated by Jay Rubin. ![]() Like the critically acclaimed movie, they just might melt your heart and brain. Somehow, a martial arts action movie that includes googly eyes and people with hot dogs for fingers also moved audiences to tears with its familial drama, proving that-when done well-genre-bending stories can enhance the best of each category.īelow is a list of similarly bizarre yet utterly exceptional novels for adults that feature parallel universes, time travel, or other multidimensional concepts. ![]() Watch out, Marvel! You may think you have the market cornered when it comes to multiverse cinema experiences, but anyone who’s seen Everything Everywhere All at Once would argue that watching Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh)-an aging Chinese American immigrant who’s struggling to hold onto her husband (Ke Huy Quan), daughter (Stephanie Hsu), father (James Hong), and laundromat business-jump along the space-time continuum is far more fascinating than any comic book hero. ![]()

Robert munsch i have to go6/23/2023 ![]() I suddenly felt a pee story coming on so I made up a story about a little kid who goes pee at all the wrong times. The same name as my son who had peed his bed four times the night before. I said “Who wants to be in a new story?” The little kid who had to go pee stuck up his hand and said “me, me.” This was the end of the storytelling and I was making up a new story. I didn’t pay attention.Īfter awhile he starts to yell “pee, pee, pee.” His father ran down the aisle, carried him out the back door, brought him back in a few minutes and sat him down. A little boy in the front row started to jump up and down on his seat. The next day I was telling stories in a small town called Cookstown, Ontario. ![]() I was doing laundry at three in the morning and was really upset. ![]() When my son Andrew was almost three years old he was still wetting his bed. ![]()
