The killing sea by richard lewis6/27/2023 ![]() Sarah barely registers Ruslan's existence before stalking off to the sailboat when her mother insists she don a headscarf out of respect for the local culture. A budding artist, he returns home later that night and draws her in his sketchbook (against the teachings of a local cleric who deems any image-making to be a form of idolatry). Ruslan (whose mechanic father ultimately fixes the engine) is captivated by Sarah's blue eyes. The two meet briefly when Sarah's family anchors their sailboat near the cafe, looking for a mechanic to fix their engine. Two protagonists move through the story: Ruslan, a local Indonesian boy who works at a small beachside cafe in the town of Meulaboh and Sarah, a teenager sailing with her family through the Indonesian islands over the Christmas holiday. Am I glad I did! It's a wonderful read and a real page turner. ![]() ![]() I purchased it for my son but couldn't wait for him to get through a trilogy he is currently reading and so I picked up The Killing Sea and read it myself. I finished Richard Lewis's most recent YA novel The Killing Sea in two days. ![]()

Gaijin by Matt Faulkner6/26/2023 ![]() Compassion becomes the key to Koji's salvation, and Faulkner's narrative elicits real pathos. ![]() Aimless and filled with self-doubt, Koji begins to act out by committing petty theft and disrespecting authority, including his mother. Even with a loving mother and avuncular neighbor, Koji dreams of his father, who is abroad in Japan and whose absence places Koji under suspicion by the FBI. Like many people of mixed race, Koji doesn't seem to fit in anywhere%E2%80%94harassed and called "slanty eyes" and a "Jap spy" by Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and a "gaijin" (a pejorative for foreigner) by the Japanese at the camp. ![]() Faulkner (A Taste of Colored Water) draws on his own ancestry as inspiration for the story of 13-year-old Koji Miyamoto, a half-Japanese boy who is sent to an internment camp during WWII. ![]()

The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() It is a tragic book in which almost all of the romances and other relationships are doomed. This is a harrowing book which includes violence towards women (but not sexual violence), animals, and children. Fans of Norse mythology might not get the same sense of surprise, but I think they will share my enjoyment of the rich world and characters. But to those readers, Gornichec offers this: instead of fighting the end, focus on the details and savor the life-and the change-that can be built in the cracks that fate has neglected. ![]() After all, this story is not what we have been told to expect of tales of Vikings and witches. ![]() For some readers, the small scale of Gornichec’s novel and the focus on the inevitability of Ragnarök might be frustrating. She never denies the tragedy that is inevitable in any story of Norse mythology. And this is where the beauty of Gornichec’s work lives. invites us to swim in these details, lulling us with descriptions of a family dynamic that we know can’t possibly last. Rather, it is a character study of a woman whose story has otherwise been relegated to but a few sentences of mythology. Gornichec’s work is not a book of swashbuckling Viking adventure. In their stead, Gornichec highlights the overlooked witch Angrboda, Loki’s mate and the mother of monsters. Gone are the death-defying feats of Odin and nearly invisible is the quick-tempered Thor. both staggering in its beauty and delicate in its execution as it takes the Norse characters and stories we are so familiar with and shoves them to the background. ![]()

From 1830 to 1836 he held various jobs, some of them on newspapers in Brooklyn and Manhattan. In 1823, the family moved to Brooklyn, where Walt had his schooling (1825-30). His father, Walter, was a laborer, carpenter, and house builder. ![]() Walt Whitman was born in West Hills, Long Island, New York on May 31, 1819. He is essentially a poet, though other aspects of his achievement - as philosopher, mystic, or critic - have also been stressed. His achievement is great, although it has been sometimes obscured by unfair, hostile criticism - or, conversely, by extravagant praise. He rose from obscurity to monumental fame, coming to be recognized as a national figure. Walt Whitman is both a major poet and an outstanding personality in the history of American literature. Hench book review6/24/2023 ![]() Hench reads like a comic without the illustrations and is packed with subplots and rapid-fire wit. In this refreshing, subversive, and darkly humorous debut novel, poet and journalist Walscholts slowly reveals the nuances of her superpower-filled world, keeping readers guessing. How much death and destruction do heroes cause as a consequence of their “heroism”? What she finds shocks her and catapults her into the heart of the battle between heroes and villains. Angered by being cast aside as collateral damage, Anna decides to dig into the data. But her boring, static life gets rocked when she has a quite literal run-in with the national icon of heroes: Supercollider. If she had a superpower, it would be making spreadsheets. Anna does temp work for villains, but she’s just a data nerd. ![]() In reality, henching isn’t as evil or dangerous as you might think-most henches are just regular folks trying to get by. Hold on to your capes, there’s a new superpower in town in the form of, um, data analysis? In Anna’s world, Superheroes and Supervillains are very real, so naturally they have their trusty sidekicks and evil henchmen. ![]() |
